School sports league follow suit canceling seasons: The University Interscholastic League and the Texas Association of Parochial and Private Schools announced Friday the cancellation of all activities for the rest of the school year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More inmates test positive for COVID-19 at Bexar jail: A total of 15 inmates have now tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Five new cases were confirmed Friday.

Gov. issues new order: Gov. Greg Abbott announced San Antonio News Friday he is extending school closures through the end of the school year.

Under the order, schools—including public, private, and higher education institutions—will remain closed for the 2019-2020 school year. Teachers may go into the classroom for video instruction, to perform administrative duties, and to clean out their classrooms.


The Texas Education Agency issued a statement supporting the governor's order.

"While a difficult decision to make, it is the right one for our families and communities — and the only one that makes sense for Texas at this time," the agency said.

21st deputy tests positive: The Bexar County Sheriff's Office reported Press Release Distribution Service In San Antonio that another deputy has tested positive for COVID-19. The deputy worked in the detention division and officials are trying to trace all the positive cases in BCSO to determine where the source of infection initially occurred, officials said.

In addition, BCSO has recorded one video visitation civilian employee, one dispatcher, one facilities maintenance employee, a fleet maintenance employee, and a University Health Systems nurse. Ten inmates in custody at the Bexar County Jail have also tested positive for COVID-19.

2nd VIA driver tests positive: A second VIA bus driver has tested positive for COVID-19, officials said Friday.

The driver, who last reported for duty on April 6, is self-quarantining at home. Officials said they do not know how the individual contracted the virus. The buses they drove — a list of which is available here — have been sanitized daily.

4th firefighter tests positive: A fourth member of the San Antonio Fire Department has tested positive for COVID-19. Officials said Friday that the number of SAFD personnel in quarantine now stands at 53.

On Thursday, the department placed all firefighters at one station in quarantine following a third case of the coronavirus.

Gold's Gym closes 3 S.A. locations: Gold’s Gym is permanently closing roughly 30 gyms nationwide, including three in the San Antonio area. The company posted identical closure notices on Facebook pages for its locations at 5025 Prue Road, 15759 San Pedro Ave. and 21044 U.S. Highway 281 North.In the posts, Gold’s Gym said it will email customers updates on membership, pre-paid dues and services, including transferring to a different location.
