Amazon unveils new generative AI assistant Alexa+

Amazon has unveiled its latest generative AI assistant, Alexa+, during a live event in New York on Wednesday, February 26. This new iteration of Alexa promises to be ‘more conversational, smarter, and personalized’ than its predecessors, making it easier for users to manage tasks effectively.

Alexa+ is built on a sophisticated large language model (LLM) that introduces agentic capabilities, allowing it to perform a variety of tasks through a system concept known as ‘experts.’ This framework comprises groups of systems, capabilities, APIs, and instructions tailored to accomplish specific objectives, enhancing the user experience.

The evolution of generative AI has led to the arrival of Alexa+, which is marketed as Amazon's most advanced AI assistant to date. It seamlessly integrates LLMs, agentic capabilities, third-party services, and more, thereby creating a rich, interactive experience for users. In a tweet announcing the new assistant, Amazon highlighted its role in making daily tasks more manageable and engaging.

With the help of these ‘experts,’ Alexa+ can perform a wide range of functions, including controlling smart home devices, making reservations or appointments, exploring music catalogs, ordering groceries, and even reminding users when tickets become available for purchase. The Senior Vice President of Devices & Services, Panos Panay, emphasized the significance of this advancement, stating, “With 600 million Alexa devices now out in the world, the latest advancements in generative AI have unlocked new possibilities—enabling us to reimagine the experience in our pursuit of making customers’ lives better and easier every day.”

Alexa+ is designed to enhance the conversational aspect of its interactions. The assistant can understand half-formed thoughts, follow colloquial expressions, and navigate complex ideas, making it a more intuitive tool for users.

How to Access Amazon’s New Alexa+

As many households already utilize the previous Alexa devices, access to Alexa+ will be through a newly launched mobile app alongside a browser-based experience. The rollout is set to begin in the United States over the next few weeks during an early access phase, followed by a gradual expansion in the months to come.

During this initial rollout, users who own devices such as the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 will be given priority access. While Amazon has not specified when Alexa+ will become available to users outside the U.S., interested individuals can opt to be notified when free early access is offered.

Additionally, Alexa+ will serve as a new benefit for Amazon Prime members, allowing them to use the service at no extra cost. For non-Prime members, the subscription will be priced at $19.99 per month. This strategic move aims to enhance the value of the Prime membership while expanding the reach of Alexa+ among users.
